🥋 October Word of the Month: Community
Building Strong People Through Strong Connections
At SMASH Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, our “Word of the Month” isn’t just a theme — it’s a value we live by. For October, that word is Community.
Community is the feeling of fellowship with others that comes from sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. It’s what ties us together — on the mats, at home, in school, and beyond.
When you walk into one of our SMASH academies, you’ll notice something special: students cheering for each other, coaches guiding with passion, and parents encouraging from the sidelines. That’s not just training — that’s belonging.
💪 What Community Means at SMASH
Being part of SMASH BJJ means being part of something bigger than yourself.
It’s helping your teammate up after a hard round.
It’s showing respect for your training partner.
It’s volunteering, giving back, and being the kind of person others can count on.
We tell our students that their actions outside the academy are just as important as their skills inside it. Whether it’s being kind at school, helping at home, showing leadership in church, or supporting a friend in another sport — every small act of service strengthens our community.
🌎 Beyond the Mats
Our mission goes far beyond teaching self-defense. We’re helping build confident young leaders who understand that their choices have an impact. Every handshake, every “good job,” and every smile creates ripples that reach into families, schools, and neighborhoods all across Spokane.
That’s why we focus on values first, victories second. When we build a culture based on teamwork, discipline, and respect, the wins naturally follow — both on the mats and in life.
❤️ A Message from Professor Adam Smith
“Community is everything. I’ve always believed that Jiu Jitsu is more than a sport — it’s a tool to build character and connection. The best part of my job isn’t just watching students earn stripes or medals, it’s watching them grow into people who lift others up. That’s what makes SMASH special.”
🏠 Join the Movement
As we move through October, we encourage all of our students — kids and adults alike — to look for ways to strengthen the communities they belong to.
Be kind. Be helpful. Be a role model.
And remember: A strong community builds strong people.
