In a night Spokane won’t soon forget, Adam Smith, Spokane’s top Jiu-Jitsu instructor and founder of SMASH Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, entered the boxing ring for a special charity exhibition match against the legendary “Sugar” Shane Mosley. The event brought together martial arts, boxing, and the local community for an unforgettable cause: raising funds to support youth athletes and mentorship programs across the Northwest.
A Vision Brought to Life by Chauncy Welliver
The charity match was the brainchild of Chauncy “The Hillyard Hammer” Welliver, a former world-ranked heavyweight boxer with more than 70 professional bouts on his resume. Known for his toughness, heart, and global fight experience, Chauncy has long been a respected figure in the world of boxing—and now, he’s bringing that same passion to his new coaching position at SMASH BJJ.
Chauncy recently joined the team at SMASH to lead the academy’s boxing program, working closely with athletes of all ages to pass down decades of high-level experience. His commitment to building Spokane’s fight scene and mentoring the next generation of strikers made him the perfect force behind organizing this event.
“We wanted to put on something that brings people together and gives back,” Chauncy said. “And having Adam step in against someone like Shane Mosley? That’s the kind of thing that inspires a whole community.”
A Match Fueled by Purpose
While the bout between Adam and Shane was lighthearted and respectful, it carried powerful meaning. Proceeds from the event supported athletic scholarships, youth martial arts programs, and initiatives designed to keep kids active, engaged, and surrounded by positive role models.
For Adam Smith, this was another opportunity to lead from the front—not just as a coach, but as a community builder.
“This was never about competition—it was about connection,” Adam said. “Chauncy brought an incredible vision to life, and getting in the ring with Shane Mosley for something bigger than ourselves was an absolute honor.”
Legacy Meets Leadership
Shane Mosley’s participation elevated the entire night. As a multi-time world champion and a legend in the boxing world, Mosley’s support of the charity match added credibility, excitement, and a reminder of what martial arts can be when it’s rooted in respect and giving back.
The energy inside the venue was electric. Fans, families, and fighters packed the house to witness not just a match—but a moment. A coming together of Spokane’s fight community, led by two coaches who are shaping the region’s next generation: Adam Smith and Chauncy Welliver.
This event was more than just a fight—it was proof that when you combine elite experience, purpose, and passion for your community, incredible things happen.
Adam Smith continues to be a driving force in Spokane’s martial arts scene, while Chauncy Welliver brings his world-class boxing knowledge to SMASH BJJ’s expanding program. Together, they’re helping build champions—in the ring, on the mats, and in life.
